Russian water polo player Aleksey Vdovin represented Dynamo Moskva and CSK Navy. At the 1982 World Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Vdovin won the gold medal as part of the team from the Soviet Union. A year later the Soviet team replicated their success by winning the Water Polo World Cup tournament in Malibu, California.
In 1991 Vdovin was part of the Soviet team that won the bronze medal at the European Water Polo Championships in Athina. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, he then represented the Unified Team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where they won the bronze medal with an 8–4 victory against the United States. After his career in the pool Vdovin worked as a coach with multiple teams in Russia.
