Hailing from the Dominican Republic Luis Emilio Berroa initially started out as a bodybuilder before switching to weightlifting in 1966. Berroa represented his country at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1970, 1974, and 1978, and at the Pan American Games in 1971, 1975, and 1979. At the 1972 München Olympics he competed in the light-heavyweight class finishing in 17th place.
In the same year as the Olympics Berroa took part in the Weightlifting Championship of the Americas in Jamaica. He followed that by representing the Dominican Republic at the World Weightlifting Championships in 1973 and 1974. Berroa lived in New York before moving to Elk River, Minnesota.
