Sunil Joshi was the best known Nepalese weightlifter, competing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Joshi competed at the first South Asian Games in 1974 and eventually participated at those Games six times, winning six silver and 11 bronze medals. He later became the chief weightlifting coach at the National Sports Council, and became vice-president of the Nepal Weightlifting Association and Chairman of the Olympic Association.
