Lew Beck played college basketball at Oregon State, but was better known as an AAU star in the 40s with the great Phillips ‘66 teams. He accomplished this after sustaining a leg injury while fighting in World War II. He never played professional basketball, instead accepting a business position with the Phillips Company. The Lew Beck Memorial Award is given at Oregon State to the basketball team’s most outstanding newcomer. Beck is a member of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
