Fred Winters of the New Westside AC of New York led the dumbbell event throughout most of the 1904 Olympic competition. The event consisted of 10 exercises with points awarded for each. Winters led through the first nine exercises, but the 10th exercise was an optional one with points awarded at the judges’ discretion. Winters did six one-arm push-ups with 105 lbs. (48 kg.) on his back, but the judges thought Oscar Osthoff’s performance of putting up a bridge six times, with 177 lbs. (80 kg.) on his back, was worth sufficient points to put him ahead of Winters, who settled for the silver medal.
