FormatThe scoring for the first nine sections gave five points for first, three points for second, and one point for third. In section ten, the judges and referee had the power to award the points in any number thought proper but the total number of points awarded in section ten was not to exceed 25.

The all-around dumbbell contest was contested by three Americans: Oscar Osthoff, Fred Winter, and Franz Kugler. It was an unusual event that was essentially a weightlifting decathlon in which nine different dumbbell movements were contested. Each section awarded five points for first, three points for second, and one point for third. The 10th section was for optional feats which saw the two remaining athletes, Osthoff and Winter, doing optional exercises to earn points. They could earn up to 25 points in the 10th section, based on the judges’ opinions.

After nine sections Winter led Osthoff, 38-33. In the 10th section, Winter did six one-arm push-ups, with 105¼ lbs (47¾ kg) on his back, which was awarded 7 points. However, Osthoff did six two-hand bridges carrying 177 lbs (80.3 kg), which brought him 15 points and the gold medal.
