Biography

Growing up in both Vancouver and Lethbridge, Ron Bissett nurtured his basketball talents in high school and was offered scholarships to several universities in the United States and Canada. He elected to remain in his native country and attend the University of British Columbia, but he was eventually recruited by Seattle University, for whom he played from 1952 through 1954. He returned to Canada on the weekends, however, to play amateur basketball with the Alberni Athletics and, in 1955, helped the team win the Canadian National Championships. This victory contributed to his being selected, alongside teammate Doug Brinham, to represent Canada in basketball at the 1956 Summer Olympics, where his nation finished ninth among fifteen squads.

Bissett retired from active competition following the Games, although he remained athletically active for many years as a pitcher in club-level baseball. Outside of sports, he graduated from Seattle University in 1956 with a degree in business and put it to good use by running several small businesses, eventually becoming a CPA. He remained in the United States until his death from cancer in July 2015. As a member of the Alberni Athletics, he was inducted into the British Columbia Sports and Basketball BC Halls of Fame in 2001 and 2014 respectively.
