Theodor Tirkkonen had his last major tournament wrestling in the middleweight A division at the 1912 Olympics. He was eliminated after round 4, after winning and losing two contests each. In round 2, he met future gold medalist Claes Johanson and was only defeated by decision. Like his brother Paul, he competed in some of the very early editions of the Finnish Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling. He took the consecutive titles in the 1904-1906 events in the < 70 kg division, prevailing over his brother who placed 3rd in 1906. In the following year, he moved up to the < 85 kg class finishing in 3rd place. In 1911, he won silver at the unofficial World Championships in Helsinki in the < 73 kg division.
