Carl Cain attended the University of Iowa, graduating from there in 1956. He was the star at Iowa when they twice won the Big Ten Championship and went to the finals of the NCAA tournament before losing. Cain never played pro basketball but went on to a career as a bookkeeper. For a time he was the brother-in-law of 1956 Olympic teammate, K. C. Jones.
