Japanese wrestler Jiichiro Date won the gold medal in the welterweight freestyle class at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, and was named the best wrestler of the tournament. Four years earlier in München he went out in round three in Greco-roman welterweight. In 1973 he surprised in winning the World Cup, while at the 1975 Worlds he claimed the bronze medal. After the 1976 Games Date retired and became a well-known wrestling coach in Japan.
