Mike Dancis and his brother George Dancis both played basketball for Australia at the Olympics, Mike in 1964 and George in 1956. Native Latvians, their family fled to Germany in 1943 after Soviet occupation, and at the end of war they left German refugee camps and settled in Australia.
In addition to his basketball exploits Mike was an active member of the Latvian diaspora in Adelaide, South Australia. He was a member of the Daugavas Vanagi Latvian relief society, singing in the organization’s choir, and he also participated in the Latvian fraternity Selonija. Dancis was the former director of the 3x3 camp for Latvians of any age, and organized diaspora sports events throughout his lifetime.
