Gustav Tiefenthaler was born in Switzerland but the family moved to the United States when he was young. Tiefenthaler was still a Swiss citizen in 1904, but he represented the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, an American club. At the Olympics, Tiefenthaler wrestled one bout and lost, but earned a bronze medal for his efforts.
