Biography

Hugo Toeppen wrestled welterweight freestyle at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, losing in the quarter-finals. He represented the Concordia Turnverein of St. Louis. Toeppen’s son, Manfred, also competed at the 1904 Olympics, as a water polo player.

Hugo Toeppen was born on 8 October 1853 in Poland. At the time of his 1904 Olympic participation he was 51 years, 6 days old. In a record unlikely to ever be broken, this makes Hugo Toeppen the oldest Olympic wrestler of all-time.
