Biography

Soviet sailor Valery Afanasyev competed in the Dragon class at international competitions during the 1960s. Afanasyev won gold at the 1968 European Sailing Championships in Helsinki along with crewmates Yury Anisimov and Valery Ruzhnikov. Later the same year the trio competed at the Mexico City Olympics where they finished 11th with a best individual result of fourth in the third of the seven races. After his competitive sailing career Afanasyev worked at a sports school sailing centre in Arkhangelsk, first as their deputy director, before working as their director from 2004 until 2014. He was bestowed with the titles of International Master of Sports of the USSR and the Honoured Worker of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation.
