Dartmouth-educated Joe Batchelder joined two Harvard men, Don McNamara, the helmsman, and Frank Scully to take a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics in the 5.5 metre class. They only made the Olympic team by winning the final race of the Olympic Trials. At Tokyo their yacht Bingo placed only 10th in the first race, but they came back to win the next two races, and had a shot at gold in the final race if they could win, but had to settle for bronze. Batchelder did most of his sailing out of the Eastern Yacht Club. He was a native of Marblehead, Massachusetts.
