John Biby briefly attended the University of Washington but later settled at UCLA with fellow 1932 sailors Bill Cooper and Richard Moore. He graduated in 1933 with a degree in economics. He later attended Stanford Law School, but did not finish. In 1932, while a member of the California Yacht Club, he sailed aboard Owen Churchill’s boat, the Santa Maria, which won the gold medal in the 8-metre class. After World War II, Biby joined the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and raced penguin dinghies. Biby’s business career was with Douglas Aircraft, which he joined in 1935.
