Henry Duys grew up on Long Island, New York. He prepped at the Choate School and then attended Dartmouth, before graduating from Hobart College in 1950. Duys served in the US Navy during World War II. He sailed out of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, Long Island. With his brother, Jack, Duys took over the company tobacco company, H. Duys and Company Havana Tobacco, in the 1950s. They sold tobacco from Cuba and also had tobacco farms in Connecticut.
