János Greminger’s first club was Szegedi Postás, then he moved to Szegedi Vasutas, BVSC and finally to the place of his greatest successes, the then almost unbeatable Budapesti Honvéd. With the club Greminger won 13 national championship titles and five Hungarian Cups during his 16 seasons. Between 1951 and 1964 he also played 156 times for the Hungarian national team. He participated in three Olympics as a player (1952 Helsinki, 1960 Roma, 1964 Tokyo). Greminger was a member of the European champion team in Budapest in 1955, the silver medallist in Moscow in 1953, and the fourth-placed team in Sofia in 1957, Istanbul in 1959, and Wroclaw in 1963. In 1962 he played for the European team, and in 1964 he was chosen as the basketball player of the year in Hungary.
In 1971 Greminger obtained a certificate as a specialist coach and in 1975 as a sports organizer at the College of Physical Education in Budapest. He was a sports manager at the Bp. Honvéd, a department manager at the National Office of Physical Education and Sports, and the leader of the Hungarian team at several summer and winter Olympics. He participated in three Olympics as an athlete and nine as a sports manager. In 1966 his book Húsz év a palánk alatt (Twenty Years Under the Plank) was published.
His wife, Ibolya Tilkovszky, was a multiple Hungarian champion short-distance runner, and participated in the Olympics in Helsinki.
