György Holovits started to sail at age 10, although he also played handball during his university years. He began competing in Star class in 1965 with András Gosztonyi. In 1968, the Hungarian Sailing Association nominated them to compete at the Olympics, but they did not participate. In 1972, they finished eighth. At György’s second Olympic appearance, he sailed alongside his brother, Tamás Holovits, finishing 10th. They also placed third at the 1984 Friendship Games.
His brother left the team in 1987, prior to the Seoul Olympics, and György competed in non-Olympic boat classes afterwards. He won 31 Hungarian Championships, many major races, and several top competitions on Lake Balaton and other European lakes. He later formed the Holovits Sailing Shop and Sailing School in 1997, and also contributed greatly to Balatonföldvár, one of the centres for Hungarian sailing sport. Holovits was later made an Honorary Citizen of Balatonföldvár.
