Alan Holt was from Seattle, Washington, where he attended the University of Washington, graduating in 1963 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He later worked as an engineer. Holt raced for the Seattle Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle. He won the 1956 Sears Cup and in 1967 was US Champion in the Star class.
