In his youth, Tim Irwin bounced between schools in California and Canada, but eventually settled on the University of British Columbia for college, where he earned a degree in physics. He subsequently earned a master’s degree in 1965, the same year that he joined the Kingston Yacht Club. The pinnacle of his sailing career came at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where, representing Canada, he came in fourth in the Dragon Class, alongside Steve Tupper and Dave Miller. Nonetheless, he dedicated the remainder of his life to sailing, becoming a key member of Canadian Olympic Regatta Kingston and serving as commodore of his club. Among his numerous honours, he was inducted into the Kingston Sports Hall of Fame in 2020. By career he worked in the technical department of DuPont.
