Biography

John Robertson followed in the footsteps of his father Norm, a competitive sailor who took part in the 1924 Paris Games. John started his own sailing pursuits at the age of only 8 and soon joined the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club’s junior section. He eventually moved his way up to the senior team and débuted at the Olympics in 1948 in London in the Swallow Class, where he and Dick Townsend finished seventh among 14 crews. He switched to the Dragon Class for the 1952 Helsinki Games and came in 10th among 17 teams alongside Archibald Howie and Donald Hains. Robertson continued competing internationally until 1975, when a heart attack forced him to stop. He was made a member of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club’s Hall of Fame in 2015 and was involved heavily in the building of boats.
