Michael Schoettle attended Yale, graduating in 1958 with a degree in English, and then earned an MBA from Harvard in 1963, spending a short time in the Navy before returning to graduate school. Schoettle began sailing with his brother, Andy, in Mantoloking, on the Jersey Shore, near Barnegat Bay. Schoettle was team leader of the US Olympic yachting team in 1992, and served as a vice-president of USA Sailing.
Schoettle worked for 23 years for Heidrick & Struggles, a global executive search firm, in Los Angeles. Schoettle then spent 10 years at Xerox Corporation in marketing and sales management positions and three years in marketing at the Stokes Equipment Division of Pennsalt Chemicals Corporation in Philadelphia. He later established and led the Professional Growth Planning course at Loyola Marymount University.
