In addition to athletics, he became a well-known cricketer, representing Queensland in seven Sheffield Shield Matches, débuting in April 1920 against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Hutcheon’s business career was as a barrister, practicing in the Crown Law Office and with a private practice in Toowoomba. He fought in World War I, eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and suffering severely from a gas attack, from which he never fully recovered.
