Mike Sands was a sprinter who competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, carrying the Bahamian flag in the Opening Ceremony at both Olympics. He ran in college in the United States for Penn State University, after starring at Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, New York. Sands was the 1975 NCAA Indoor Champion in the 440 yards, after finishing third in that event in 1974.
Sands became head of the Bahamian Athletics Federation. He later served as President of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) and was a member of the World Athletics Council.
