Biography

Omer Smet was a Belgian track and field athlete who won six national titles in the hurdles in the years following the end of World War I. Smet won his first Belgian title in 1919 when he won the 400 metres hurdles in a time of 58.6 seconds, setting a national record that he would hold until 1932. He did the 110 metres and 400 metres hurdles double in 1920 and 1921 before winning his final title in 1922 with victory in the 110 metres. Smet ran in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics but did not finish in his heat. He also ran in the 4 × 100 metres and 4 × 400 metres relay races, finishing sixth in the latter with Jules Migeot, Omer Corteyn, and François Morren.
