Sterling Hinds was a man of many athletic talents. His first interest in sports was ice hockey, but he soon took up track and field athletics and football. In the former, his greatest success came at the 1984 Summer Olympics when he won a bronze medal as part of the Canadian 4x100 m relay team that included Ben Johnson, Tony Sharpe, and Desai Williams. In the latter, he was offered a scholarship with the University of Washington Huskies and spent four years, from 1980 through 1983, on their football squad. His most notable achievement with the school was helping shut out the University of Iowa Hawkeyes 28-0 at the 1982 Rose Bowl. He was offered an opportunity to try out with the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys, but opted to participate in the Olympics instead. He was eventually drafted by the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, but only played in several games over the next two seasons, his career being hampered, and eventually ended, by a knee injury. He was set to return to the CFL with the 1986 incarnation of the Montreal Alouettes, but the team folded one day before the 1987 season was to begin. Hinds then retired from active competition and acquired his real estate license and, as of 2013, he works a realtor with RE/MAX.
Personal Best: 100 – 10.27 (1982).
