Jack Murdoch served in the Dunfermline and Glasgow police forces before moving to Canada where he then served with the Vancouver police force from 1912, and was a deputy chief at the time of his death at the age of 54. He represented Canada at the 1924 Olympics, finishing eighth in the hammer. Shortly after the Games, Murdoch represented the British Empire against the United States at Stamford Bridge. Murdoch led the Canadian lists in the hammer throw in 1920 and 1924, and was third in 1925. In 1924 he was sixth on the world-wide year list with 50.29 done in Vancouver on 12 May 1924. He appears not to have competed again on a national level after 1925.
