Biography

During the 1930s Larry O’Connor was one of the best hurdlers in Canada, winning multiple titles and setting several records. O’Connor broke the national record in the both the 110 metres and the 120 yards hurdles on numerous occasions, with his best times standing until the 1960s. In 1937 he also set a world indoor record for the 60 yards hurdles at a meet in Maple Leaf Gardens. He competed in the 110 metres hurdles at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he came sixth in the final. Two years later O’Connor won gold at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney in the 4 × 110 yards relay, along with John Loaring and the non-Olympians Jack Brown and Pat Haley. O’Connor also won silver in the 120 yards hurdles and finished fourth in the 220 yards. He was inducted into the University of Toronto Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Athletics Ontario Hall of Fame in 2013.
