Jack Parrington was already a competitive track athlete at the beginning of the 1950s, but he missed out on being selected for the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He was, however, chosen for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he competed in the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 4x100 metres relay and was eliminated in the first round of all of them. He also tied the world record of 10.2 seconds in the 100 metres that year, although the mark was unofficial and was never recognized by the IAAF. Earning an athletics scholarship to study business administration at the University of Houston, he competed on the school’s track team until the end of the decade and eventually returned to his birth province of Manitoba to work as a teacher and educational administrator.
Personal Bests: 100 – 10.8 (1956); 200 – 21.2 (1956).
