Hec Phillips, a decent middle distance runner, was best known as a coach. He led the track & field team of the University of Toronto for 15 years (1933-1948), 1936 Olympian Larry O’Connor among his pupils. He was a promising runner in his native Scotland, but emigrated to Canada in 1912. Although he never won a Canadian title, he did held the national 800 m record between 1920 and 1928. After his death, the Hec Phillips Trophy was instated in 1950, for the outstanding performer in the annual Ontario University Athletics track meet.
