During the 1920s Vilho Niittymaa dominated the discus throw in Finland, winning nine national titles, an Olympic silver medal, and the AAA title in England. Niittymaa won his first two Finnish titles in 1921 with gold in the standard discus throw and the throw using the combined distance from each hand. He went on to win seven more Finnish titles with four in the standard throw (1922–24, 1926) and three in the combined (1922–24), along with the English AAA title in 1922.
Niittymaa competed in the discus at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he won the silver medal with a best throw of 44.950 metres. He also won multiple silver medals in the event at the Finnish championships with four in the standard throw (1918–19, 1925, 1927) and two in the combined throw (1918–19). In addition to the discus Niittymaa had success in the shot put, winning silver medals in 1921 and 1922, along with five bronze medals (1919, 1921–23, 1925).
