Biography
Bolton schoolteacher Ethel Johnson was second in the 1934 British Empire Games 220-110-220-110 yards relay, with Eileen Hiscock, Nellie Halstead, and the non-Olympian Ivy Walker. Johnson also finished fifth in the 1934 British Empire Games 100 yards and sixth in the 1934 British Empire Games 220 yards. In the British Empire Games she competed for England. The Northern Counties 100 yards champion in 1927, 1928 and 1929, she won it again in Olympic year, 1932, when she also won the WAAA 100 yards title, and her time of 11.0 seconds in her heat was a British record that was not equalled until 1950 and not bettered until 1954.
