With only six teams entered, the event was held as only a final race. The US and Canada were co-favorites. As the final exchange neared, the Canadians had a little difficulty with the baton and a clean US pass put Billie Von Bremen into a very slight lead. She maintained that lead, but won by less than a metre as both teams broke the world record.
