John Hanlon won the 220y and 440y at the 1929 AAA Championships, a feat which has not since been duplicated. He was also a finalist in the 220y (1930-31) and 440 (1928, 1930) and was a member of the team which won the AAA 4×440y relay title in 1931. At the 1930 British Empire Games, he won a silver medal in the 4×110y relay (with James Cohen, John Heap, and Stanley Englehart). Hanlon also competed in the 1930 British Empire Games 220 yards and 440 yards, but was eliminated in the heats in both occasions. In the 1931 match vs. Germany on Köln, he ran on the 4×400 relay team which set a new UK record of 3:15.0. Called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, he practiced as a barrister on the North Eastern Circuit.
