Stanley Engelhart won both sprints at the Northern Championships twice (1928-30) and was the 220 y champion for a third time in 1933. In 1929, at the age of 19, he was a finalist in both sprints at the AAAs and his estimated time of 22.1 in second place in the 220 y was a UK junior “record”. He gained his first international honour that year when he represented England in the traingular natch against Ireland and Scotland at Cork, and won the 220 y. In 1930 he won the AAA 220 y title and was also the British Empire Games 220 y Champion, but could only finish sixth in the 100 y. He also won a silver medal as part of England’s sprint relay team of James Cohen, John Heap and John Hanlon. A leg injury in 1931 meant he could not defend his Northern and AAA titles. Despite finishing third in the 1932 AAA 220 y he was selected for the Olympic Games, but at the Games he sustained a pulled muscle and was eliminated in the second round of the 200 m, although he still managed to take his place on the 4×100 metres relay team. During his athletics hey day. Engelhart worked as a clerk at the Olympia Oil and Cake Mill in Selby.
Personal Bests: 100y – 9.9w (1930); 220y – 21.8 (1930/36).
