Willie Jack was the Scottish 100- and 220 yards champion three years in succession, 1951-53. He also held Scottish national records at both distances. The closest he came to winning an English AAA title was in 1952 when he finished third behind McDonald Bailey and Brian Shenton. That same year, Jack reached the semi-final of the 100 metres at the Helsinki Olympics, and he then teamed up with Bailey, Shenton, and Jack Gregory to qualify for the final the 4x100 metres relay, where the British quartet finished fourth.
Despite many successes in his native Scotland, Jack’s collection of silverware would have been substantially greater had it not been for McDonald Bailey being around at the same time.
Personal Best: 100 – 10.7 (1952).
