Harry Watson

Harry Watson won both the 100- and 220 yards for London Athletic Club in their annual match against Birchfield Harriers in 1904. The following year he enjoyed probably the best performance of his career when, at the AAA Championship he finished third in the 100 yards behind defending champion Jack Morton and Scotland’s Jimmy Stark, two men who would be fellow Olympians three years later. Having joined South London Harriers in 1905, Watson beat Stark in the 100 yards at the Harriers’ Autumn meeting at Kennington Oval, and in 1906 Watson finished runner-up to Claude Jupp, the holder, in the final of the Surrey 120 yards championship. In May 1908 Watson took part in the athletics meeting at the inauguration of the Great Stadium (later the White City Stadium), and the following month finished second in the Great Britain Olympic trial behind Meyrick Chapman of Finchley. At the Olympics, Watson finished third in his opening heat of the 100 metres, and was eliminated.
