Biography

Alvin Robertson was renowned for his defensive expertise. He played in college at the University of Arkansas, finishing in 1984, and was then the seventh overall pick of the 1984 NBA Draft, chosen by the San Antonio Spurs. Robertson played with the Spurs from 1984-89, and then played in the NBA until 1996, with the Milwaukee Bucks (1989-93), Detroit Pistons (1993), and Toronto Raptors (1995-96). He played a year with the Florida Beachdogs of the CBA (Continental Basketball Association) in 1996-97, and had a brief few games in 2000 with the San Antonio Bombers of the SBL (Southwest Basketball League).

During his NBA career, Robertson was a four-time All-Star (1986-88, 1991). He was NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1986, made the NBA All-Defensive first team in 1987 and 1991, and was second-team in 1986 and 1988-90. He was chosen All-NBA second team in 1986, the same year he was named the winner of the inaugural NBA Most Improved Player Award. Robertson averaged 14.0 points/game in the NBA, finishing with 10,882 points. Through 2015 Robertson is the NBA career leader in steals per game with 2.71. He led the league in steals in 1986, 1987, and 1991.
