Sprinter Erwin Gillmeister won a bronze medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 4x100 relay together with Wilhelm Leichum, Erich Borchmeyer and Gerd Hornberger, trailing the USA by four seconds and Italy by one second. In 1934, he also won the European Championship in that event with Borchmeyer, Hornberger and Egon Schein. Domestically he never managed to win a title, but was runner-up in the 1936 200 metres. Gillmeister ran for TV Germania Stolp during much of his career, but in 1930 was with DSV Hannover 78.
