Sprinter Franz Happernagel took part in the 4×100 relay together with Peter Kraus, Werner Zandt and Josef Heinen at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, but the team was eliminated in the heats. The same year Happernagel placed third at the West German Championships. He later became a commercial clerk, but his grandson Christian also became a nationally successful sprinter.
