Middle- and long-distance runner Erwin von Sigel was considered for the 1908 London Olympics but could not travel there for unknown reasons. He then reached the final of the 1,500 at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games, and was also eliminated in the first round of the 3K team race. In his youth von Sigel was a hockey (field) player and outdoor gymnast, before he changed to athletics in 1905. In 1907, 1909 and 1912 he was German Champion in the 1,500. In 1912, he was the first German to better nine minutes (8:59.6) for 3,000 metres. After World War II he emigrated to the United States, where he died in 1967. By profession he was a businessman.
