Dermot Sheriff was stationed with Western Command in Athlone, Westmeath when he was one of six other fellow Western Command servicemen, along with his brother Paddy, brother-in-law Bill Jackson, Tommy Keenan, Jim McGee, and Danny Reddin, selected to compete on the 12-man Irish basketball team at the 1948 Olympics. Dermot was also a member of the Army School of Music and long-time member Western Command Army Band.
Unfortunately for Sheriff and the Irish team, they suffered four heavy defeats in their opening pool, scoring just 70 points and conceding 281. Their record was the worst of the 23 competing countries, and they were placed last after two classification matches. Through 2024 it remains the only time Ireland sent a basketball team to the Olympics.
