All-round sportsman Jagmohan Singh competed in track and field athletics before becoming the coach of the Indian field hockey team. As an athlete Singh specialised in the 110 metres hurdles, winning three consecutive national titles in the event from 1958 to 1960. He also held national records in both the hurdles and the decathlon. In 1960 Singh competed in the 110 metres hurdles at the Roma Olympics but did not advance from the opening heats.
As well as being one of the best athletes in the country in his day, Singh was a pioneer in sports coaching, introducing scientific training methods in athletics, hockey, and cycling. Originally a police officer with the Punjab Police Force, he moved into coaching towards the end of his athletics career. In 1965 Singh undertook a course in physical education and sports conditioning at the University of West Germany in Cologne. With the skills he learnt he trained sprinters and hurdlers for almost 20 years, including working as the athletics coach for the Indian team at the 1966 Commonwealth Games and the 1975 Asian Athletics Championships.
Outside of athletics Singh was the fitness and conditioning coach of the Indian field hockey team. He introduced new techniques for the team and accompanied the squad at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. Later in his career he also worked as the physical conditioning adviser for the Cycling Federation of India.
Personal Best: 110H – 14.5 (1960).
