Biography

Massimo Cartesegna was an athlete who competed from 400 meters to the middle distances and was also an Italian football referee. At the beginning of the 20th century, he was among the best Italian middle-distance runners, competing at the 1908 London Olympics in four events. He started competing in his city of Torino with Sport Club Audace, then moving to Novara to compete for Ginnastica & Scherma for athletics while he still represented Audace in football.

Domestically Cartesegna won five national titles, albeit in events no longer contested nationally in Italy, including the 1,000 metres (1907, 1909) and the 1,200 m steeplechase (1908-09, 1911). After he stopped competing he became a club coach and also manager of the Italian national team in the years 1925-26.

Personal Bests: 400 – 51.4 (1909); 1500 – 4:16.2 (1908).
