Great Britain was the only team to finish three runners in the first heat and, in the second heat, the United States and France eliminated Sweden. In the final, the British runners filled the first three places to give them the victory, with the minimum score of 6 points (1+2+3). The British runners took turns in the lead in the final. Joe Deakin pulled away on the final lap to win the race individually. His time was officially given as 14:39.6, with a margin of 1.4 seconds, but descriptions of the race actually mention that he finished 30 yards in front of Arthur Robertson, so the margin was likely much larger. France’s Jean Bouin did not finish the final after getting drunk the night before to celebrate his victory in the heats of this event.
