Biography

Ray Stewart was a Jamaican sprinter who specialized in the 100 metres. He appeared in four Olympic Games, making the 100 metre final three times, and winning a silver medal in the 1984 sprint relay. His best international finish was a silver medal in the 100 at the 1987 World Championships as well as at the Pan American Games at the same year (after finishing fourth in 1983), and he also reached the final of the 100 at the 1993 and 1995 Worlds. In the 4×100 relay, he won a bronze medal at the 1987 World Championships, the 1987 Pan American Games, and the 1990 Commonwealth Games. At the CARIFTA Games (Caribbean Free Trade Association), he was gold medalist in 1984 in the 100 and 4×100 in the under-20s, and in 1981 in the 100 and 200 in the under-17s.

Stewart later became a sprint coach, coaching mostly in the United States, and number among his clients Jerome Young, Kenny Brokenburr, and Beverly McDonald, who he later married. In June 2010 Stewart was banned for life from coaching in the United States by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), alleging that he had obtained performance-enhancing drugs for his athletes.

Personal Bests: 100 – 9.96 (1991); 200 – 20.41 (1988).
