Jill Hetherington was a Canadian tennis player who played professionally from 1983 to 1997. Hetherington achieved a career-best doubles ranking of number six in the world in March 1989, and a singles ranking of 64 in the world in February 1988. During her career she reached the final of three Grand Slam tournaments.
Hetherington won 14 WTA doubles titles with her first coming at the 1984 Brasil Tennis Cup with her partner Hélène Pelletier. Her only singles title was at the 1988 Wellington Classic in New Zealand where she beat Katrina Adams in straight sets. Hetherington and American Patty Fendick reached the doubles final of the 1988 US Open where they lost to Robin White and Gigi Fernandez. The following year the pair reached the final of the Australian Open but lost to Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver. Hetherington also reached the mixed doubles final at the 1995 French Open with South Africa’s John-Laffnie de Jager.
Hetherington competed at three Olympic Games. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics she competed in the singles when tennis was a demonstration sport, beating Carin Anderholm in the first round before losing to Catherine Tanvier in the second round. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics Hetherington again reached the second round in the singles where she lost to Pam Shriver. She then teamed with Carling Bassett-Seguso in the doubles with the pair reaching the quarter-finals. Her final Olympic appearance came in the doubles at the 1996 Atlanta Games. This time she played with Patricia Hy-Boulais where again she reached the quarter-finals.
