Biography

Dutch track and field athlete Kitty ter Braake was an excellent sprinter and hurdler who set national records in both disciplines. In 1935 Braake won her first medal at the national championships with silver in the 200 metres. The following year she was selected to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics with her dropping down to the 100 metres and the 80 metres hurdles. In a very close hurdles final, she finished fifth in 11.8 seconds, with the first four athletes all crossing the line in 11.7 seconds. Braake was part of the Dutch quartet that ran in the 4 × 100 metres relay in Berlin, also finishing in fifth. Later the same year she set a Dutch record in the 80 metres hurdles that stood until 1942, followed by winning national titles in the event in 1937 and 1938. In 1938 Braake also won bronze in the 80 metres hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in Wien.
