Biography

Wilfred Beauchamp “Billie” Legg was a South African track and field athlete who specialised as a sprinter. Legg ran in the 100 metres at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where he finished in fifth place in a race that included two false starts, one by Legg and the other by Frank Wykoff. Legg also ran in the 200 metres in Amsterdam where he reached the semi-finals but did not finish in his heat. Two years later he won two bronze medals in relay races at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario. His first bronze came in the 4 × 110 yards relay along with Willie Walters, Howard Davies, and Werner Gerhardt, and the second bronze was in the 4 × 440 yards relay, again with Walters and Gerhardt, with John Chandler completing the quartet. Legg also finished in fourth place in the 110 yards, but was eliminated in the heats of the 220 yards.
